Carta – Reichen et Robert - Felleries–Liessies Hospital

Full architectural services for the major refurbishment and extension of Felleries–Liessies Hospital.
Construction on an occupied site, delivered in three phases.

Competition winner, 2026

Environmental approach
The project targets high energy performance for the new building, anticipating RE2020: Bbio -20%, Cep -30%, E3C1 level (E+C-).
For the refurbished buildings, the intervention complies with the “existing buildings” thermal regulations on an element-by-element basis.
Bioclimatic design; heat production via a hybrid solution with heat pump and backup via the existing district heating network; renewable energy: solarised roofs (photovoltaics + green roofs); rainwater management; reduced water consumption and potential re-use.
Biodiversity: dedicated measures (including relocation of an identified protected species), control of night-time lighting and prevention of bird collisions.
Materials and construction: use of lower-impact materials (certified timber, low-carbon concrete where appropriate, EPDs/INIES), demountable elements.
Low-impact site charter implemented throughout works on the occupied site.

Areas

The project is set within the Avesnois Regional Nature Park, on the historic site of a former sanatorium that later became a hospital, at the heart of a rolling landscape.
The extension creates a central, structuring building that rearticulates the whole complex:
At upper level, a bright reception area open to the broader landscape organises and streamlines all circulation routes.
At lower level, a true therapeutic hinge brings together technical and rehabilitation spaces, optimising both team workflows and patient care.
Drawing on the topography and built heritage, the architecture is embedded into the slope, with a light, transparent upper level and a mineral plinth anchored into the ground.
The project prioritises natural light, calming views and landscape continuity to enhance comfort and wellbeing.
Finally, generous outdoor terraces extend care into the open air.
